Gidday from Down Under, fearless friends! What a privilege to be invited to blog along with the rest in this powerful Becoming Fearless segment. I’m an Atlantan by birth and have been a resident of New Zealand for almost 10 years now. Met a couple of young newlyweds in Cyprus over 20 years ago when visiting by chance, and two years later, they invited me back to stay with them. My life took a turn that I’d never expected when I met the Kiwi bungee jumpmaster who wouldn’t accept “no” for an answer that summer! Three years of living in the Mediterranean before getting married made me start thinking my life might end up just a little bit differently, to say the least. Truthfully, adjusting to life in NZ was really hard for me. I sent email after email home to friends, explaining all the idiosyncracies of life here (which made them howl with laughter). My sister, living comfortably in Los Angeles, said this was my time in life to “get back to simplicity,” but meanwhile I was craving my gorgeous shopping malls, Mexican food and Tootsie Rolls!
When I finally let go and gave in to the universe, I started appreciating the little things that make a place far from home seem special. Seeing everyone barefooted at the grocery store and having no screens on windows nor central air conditioning or heating isn’t quite so offensive now. The lifestyle here provides an easy balance between work and home; no matter where you live Windows Anytime Upgrade, you are never far from the mountains or the beach Exchange Server Key, and you can be part of the great outdoors that all Kiwis adore. Though there isn’t the choice of 249 brands of junk food lining the supermarket shelves, I do find it comforting that I am not having to keep up with my neighbors and friends by wearing the latest fashions or having the biggest SUV with the most cupholders. Matter of fact, less choice can be quite calming.
When I turned 40 a few years ago, I signed up for Outward Bound and with that, the girl who couldn’t be paid enough to be alone in the forest was actually at home with only a “convenience bucket,” nuts, apples and possums as her friend for almost three days!
Last year, I decided to host the entire NASA Discovery crew here for a visit to inspire school children in Christchurch after the devastating earthquakes. Being able to call on this country’s highest-ranking CEOs and politicians for help is something anyone with passion and drive can do here. And now I lead a charity that helps Kiwis who experience mental illness to live fuller lives. And to have such a beautiful job title? Well, that’s an honor in itself.
So life is pretty good. I guess you can say that because I’ve tried life in a whole new realm, unexpected and special experiences have reshaped and helped expand my thinking so much more than if I’d played it safe and predictably, like most people.
Be fearless and let life flow, I say.

ATHENS (Reuters) – Hundreds of thousands of workers across southern Europe protested against spending cuts at May Day rallies on Tuesday, before weekend elections in Greece and France where voters are expected to punish leaders for austerity.
Unions in Spain, Portugal, Italy, France and Greece used the traditional marches to express anger over a savings drive across the euro zone, aimed at shoring up public finances but criticized for forcing countries deeper into recession.
Italian demonstrators briefly clashed with police in riot gear in Turin and thousands marched in the central city of Rieti to listen to the leaders of the country’s three main unions denounce Prime Minister Mario Monti’s reforms.
French trade unions organized about 290 demonstrations, from Marseille in the south to Strasbourg in the east, as well as in Paris. The Interior Ministry said 316,000 people turned out altogether, compared to 77,000 in 2011.
President Nicolas Sarkozy attracted almost 100,000 to a rival Paris rally for “real workers” after the largest union, the CGT, advised members to vote him out of power on Sunday, the first time a union has openly urged a vote against a candidate.
In Madrid, tens of thousands headed in the rain to the main square waving signs opposing cuts, while thousands turned out in Lisbon. In Athens around 5,000 workers, pensioners and students marched with banners reading “Revolt now” and “Tax the rich”.
Greece will vote on Sunday in a parliamentary election that risks derailing the international bailout keeping the country afloat by punishing the parties that backed the package.
“Our message will be stronger on Sunday,” said Maria Drakaki replica watches, 45, a public sector worker whose salary has been cut.
“There’s no way I’m voting for one of the two main parties.”
In France, Sarkozy addressed a rally near the Eiffel Tower with a message to unite and work harder to pull France out of the financial crisis.
French voters seem poised to chose policies favoring economic growth over austerity with Socialist Francois Hollande leading Sarkozy in the polls. Far-right leader Marine Le Pen, whose supporters are key for the result, told her party’s annual rally on Tuesday she would cast a blank vote.
DESPAIR
The marches come against a backdrop of growing frustration towards austerity that more fiscally conservative northern euro zone members say is necessary to bring deficits down to meet EU limits and end the debt crisis.
Unemployment has soared and loan defaults are on the rise. In Italy there are frequent reports of suicides as people lose their jobs or their businesses fail.
A right-wing group in the northern Emilia-Romagna region plastered posters outside several cemeteries reading “Happy May Day, workers who have committed suicide”.
Protesters in Turin shouted down the local mayor as he led a parade, accusing him of not doing enough to create jobs in the city that is the home of Italian car giant FIAT.
In Portugal, thousands of people rallied in Lisbon, some with placards saying “Stop the robbery, no more stolen wages”.
The 700,000-strong CGTP union, which refused to sign a pact on labor market reforms required under a 78-billion euro EU/IMF bailout this year replica watches, rallied across Portugal under the slogan “Against exploitation and impoverishment, for a policy change”.
“Austerity is not a solution for Portugal or Europe,” said Joao Proenca, chief of the UGT union, the second biggest. “The pivotal issue is to promote job creation.”
Portugal is implementing tough austerity measures replica watches, which have deepened its recession and pushed unemployment to all-time highs of around 15 percent.
Spain’s jobless rate rose to near 25 percent in the first quarter, more than double the EU average, as the economy sank into recession. Some economists, including those at the International Monetary Fund, have questioned whether deep cuts should be made at the expense of growth.
POOR GETTING POORER
In Greece, repeated rounds of cuts have slashed wages and pensions and deepened a recession that is now in its fifth year. Private sector wages shrunk by a quarter last year alone and one Greek youth in two is out of work.
“These politicians cannot help us,” said Dina Bitsi, 58, a pensioner with two unemployed sons. “They approved the austerity package and the bailout. We are turning our backs on them.”
The two biggest Greek parties, the Socialist PASOK and the conservative New Democracy, have ruled Greece for decades but are expected to struggle to win enough support to renew their pro-bailout coalition.
Greece’s lenders have said that if the country fails to stick to the reforms pledged in return for 130 billion euros in aid, the country might be forced to abandon the euro.
Most Greeks want to keep the single currency, despite opposing the austerity measures they have been forced to endure since the country’s first EU/IMF bailout in 2010.
“We want to stay in the European Union and the euro. We realize there is a crisis but it’s unacceptable that even now the rich have become richer and the poor poorer,” Bitsi said. ($1 = 0.7555 euros)

PARIS (Reuters) – Far-right leader Marine Le Pen, who stunned France by seizing almost a fifth of presidential first round votes, said she was waiting for answers from President Nicolas Sarkozy before telling her supporters how to vote in a runoff.
After Le Pen took third place in Sunday’s ballot with the National Front’s top score in a national election, centre-right Sarkozy and Socialist frontrunner Francois Hollande have courted her voters, who may decide the May 6 second round result.
Sarkozy’s overtures have been more direct, saying that he respects National Front voters and would not criticize a vote for a party which has long been stigmatized. Hollande has said he understood voters who wanted to express their frustration at a stagnant economy and unemployment running at a 12-year high.
The president on Wednesday ruled out any deal with Le Pen which would give the far-right positions in the cabinet or help them win parliamentary seats in June’s legislative elections.
But Sarkozy has yet to say whether he would advise supporters of his UMP party to vote Socialist rather than for the National Front in the second round of the June legislative elections to keep the far-right out of parliament.
“In case of a runoff between the National Front and a Socialist, will the UMP party and the president prefer to have one of my deputies or a Socialist deputy elected?” Le Pen said on RTL radio.
“I still don’t have an answer to those questions, I am waiting. That’s a question my voters want to know about,” she said. “How I express myself will depend on the response.”
SARKOZY VOTERS WANT A PACT
Le Pen has said she would give her view on the presidential second round choice at the National Front’s traditional “Joan of Arc” May Day rally, but senior aides have suggested she was highly unlikely to endorse either candidate explicitly.
Le Pen, who took over the party founded by her ex-paratrooper father Jean-Marie in January last year, has said she hopes to profit from an implosion of the mainstream right.
The prospect of Hollande winning power has sent jitters through financial markets as the 57-year-old has pledged to renegotiate a German-inspired budget discipline pact for Europe a Tattoo Gun, putting him on a collision course with Berlin.
An opinion poll showed two-thirds of Sarkozy supporters want him to break with past policy and strike an alliance with the National Front after Le Pen’s 17.9 percent score on Sunday made her 6.4 million backers key to the presidential runoff.
Most polls show Hollande comfortably winning on May 6 by around 10 percentage points. He is expected to win the vast majority of far-left votes and much of the centrist support.
Sarkozy needs about 80 percent of Le Pen voters behind him to avoid defeat, according to analyst estimates and a Reuters calculator. But surveys conducted during or after Sunday’s first-round presidential vote found that between only 44 percent and 60 percent of Le Pen voters plan to switch to Sarkozy in round two, down from about 70 percent in 2007.
In a setback to Sarkozy, centrist Francois Bayrou, who came fifth with 9.1 percent of the vote Rotary Tattoo Machine, accused the president of being “absurd and offensive” in comparing his voters with those of Le Pen. In an open letter to both candidates on Wednesday, he called for more civil, clean and moderate politics, appearing to lean towards Hollande without explicitly endorsing him.
Hollande said Bayrou was implicitly criticizing the president’s courting of the far right. “Nicolas Sarkozy has broken the rules,” he told France Info radio. “He has understood that Sarkozy has raced to catch votes since the first round.”
A big vote for Sarkozy by National Front supporters would make it mathematically possible for him to win a fresh five-year term.
Its strong showing on Sunday has also given the National Front faith it can win seats in parliament for the first time since 1986, when a brief experiment with proportional representation gave it 35 deputies.
Based on Sunday’s results Tattoo Of Tattoo Gun, the party could reach the second round in up to 345 of the 577 constituencies in the parliamentary election, splitting the right-wing vote.
Several of Sarkozy’s top cabinet members and advisers have ruled out any alliance with the National Front, although they do not rule out the possibility of the UMP letting the party fight solely against the Socialist party in certain constituencies.

Scientists working in the Simpson Desert in far west Queensland say an explosion in feral animal numbers is threatening native mammals.
A team from the University of Sydney has been studying the desert ecosystems for the past 20 years and has just returned from a field trip 150 kilometres west of Bedourie.
Professor Chris Dickman says it trapped very few small mammals and that is a concern.
“The feral cats just seem to have exploded – there are signs of feral cats everywhere,” he said.
“Their scratching, droppings are everywhere, you see the footprints on the sand dunes.
“When you break open some of the cat droppings, the droppings are full of small mammal hairs – rat hairs, small mouse hairs.
“They are really getting stuck into some of the small mammals.”
Feral pigs have also been reported in the Simpson Desert region.
Professor Dickman says it appears the pigs have been moving down river systems from the north.
“We haven't seen it before in 20-odd years of working in the region,” he said.
“It looks as if there is more evidence of feral pigs moving into some of the drier country.
“If the pigs are now coming in and following up where the foxes and cats have already reduced their numbers, and then the feral pigs are reducing their shelters further, it is possible we are going to lose some of these species over very large areas of their ranges.”
Professor Dickman says the feral pests have thrived during ideal conditions and native animals are at risk.
“That puts a real crunch period in place where there is very intense per capita predatation on the small mammals,” he said.
“We think it can be so intense that you can get local losses of species for periods of many years.
“I guess if this sort of thing happens too frequently Tattoo Machine Supply, then you can have regional losses of species for very long periods.”
However How To Tattoo Gun, New Diamantina Mayor Geoff Morton says big numbers of pest animals are a normal part of the “boom and bust” cycle of the Channel Country.
Mr Morton The Best Tattoo Guns, from Birdsville in far south-west Queensland, says state authorities tried to control feral pigs by aerial shooting last year but it was not overly successful.
“[The then-Department of Environment and Resource Management] DERM have already had a go eradicating them last year when the season was good, which was probably pork pie stuff because it was too hard to find a pig because there was water everywhere,” he said.
“But 50 years of experience has taught me that the land will look after itself eventually, when it turns back to the more normal seasons.
“The drier ones – most of these pests can't survive.”

Many journalists have interviewed Mitt Romney during his abortion transition or written about it afterward. A few have done it really well. Here’s the best reporting I found, organized by topic.
Ann Keenan: “The abortion that Mitt doesn’t talk about anymore,” by Justin Elliott, Salon, Aug. 8, 2011. Elliott digs up everything that can be found about her: yearbook photo, gravestone, and her death notice, which ends, “Memorial tributes may be sent to the Planned Parenthood Association.”
Bishop Romney: “For Romney, a Role of Faith and Authority,” by Sheryl Gay Stolberg, New York Times, Oct. 15, 2011. “In Boston, Mitt Romney ‘evolved’ in Mormon leadership, some churchwomen say,” by Jason Horowitz Discount DKNY Clothes, Washington Post, Nov. 21 Herve Leger gown sale, 2011. “Romney, an active man of faith,” by Alana Semuels, Los Angeles Times, Dec. 7 Discount Missoni Dresses, 2011. The Romneys and IVF: Mitt Romney: An Inside Look at the Man and His Politics, by Ronald B. Scott, Lyons Press, 2012. The IVF stuff is on pages 125-127. Scott also has the best information on the 1993 Wirthlin poll and Romney’s consultations with Mormon leaders. See pages 55-56.
The epiphany: “Romney’s journey to the right,” by Scott Helman, Boston Globe, Dec. 17, 2006. Helman has Doug Melton disputing Romney’s account of the November 2004 meeting, plus information about three meetings Romney and his staff held afterward.
The cloning fight: “Massachusetts Governor Opposes Stem Cell Work,” by Pam Belluck, The New York Times, Feb. 10, 2005. Belluck scooped the Massachusetts legislature, getting Romney to lay out his views against cloning even before Romney sent his letter to Senate President Travaglini.
Romney in transition: “Romney Comments on Abortion” (audio), Washingtonpost.com, Feb. 20, 2007. Dan Balz, David Broder, and Ruth Marcus conducted this interview with Romney on Feb. 28, 2005, capturing his thoughts and evasions during the awkward transition when he was taking pro-life hormones but hadn’t yet undergone pro-life reassignment surgery.
